Awesome Author Resources with Jacque Hamilton
We talked to the super awesome Jacque Hamilton of Soapbox Editorial Services to get her thoughts on great resources for authors, including but not limited to the perfect pen:
Bird by Bird, by Anne Lamott
(We all love a book blurb, right? Here it goes:)
An essential volume for generations of writers young and old, Bird by Bird is a modern classic. This twenty-fifth anniversary edition will continue to spark creative minds for years to come.
For a quarter century, more than a million readers—scribes and scribblers of all ages and abilities—have been inspired by Anne Lamott’s hilarious, big-hearted, homespun advice.
For ease, the book is available on-line here, though we certainly always encourage a nice, happy adventure to your favorite local bookstore!
The Story Grid: What Good Editors Know (& podcast!)
We’re always a sucker over here for being able to consume excellent knowledge through a diverse array of media. Story Grid is an editing method developed by publishing industry professional Shawn Coyne. When you visit storygrid.com, you’ll find resources ranging from books to podcasts to a blog and more!
The Emotion Thesaurus
Quick question, language nerds: What is the plural of thesaurus*? In the podcast episode, Jacque and I struggled with this etymological question, but we did not struggle to agree on the brilliance of Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi’s The Emotion Thesaurus. Ever gotten stuck on choosing the perfect word to capture what your character is feeling? The Emotion Thesaurus to the rescue!
“This book comes to the rescue by highlighting 75 emotions and listing the possible body language cues, thoughts, and visceral responses for each. Using its easy-to-navigate list format, readers can draw inspiration from character cues that range in intensity to match any emotional moment.”
Again, here’s a handy on-line link to purchase this book!
Scrivener
Scrivener is a popular writing app! From their website:
“At its heart is a simple ring-binder metaphor that allows you to gather your material and flick between different parts of your manuscript, notes and references with ease. Break your text into manageable sections of any size and leave Scrivener to stitch them together.”
Their website features a handy little video to watch how to get started and they also offer a 30-day free trial period!
Time to Write Freebie
